Wine types
Most people know about Spain’s most popular wines which currently represent just a small fraction of the total produced. There is still plenty of varietals or the new blends of varietals out there to be discovered.

By varietals we are describing those wines made mostly from a single named grape variety; some people refer them as varietal or mono-varietal (Spain). The rule of thumb is that all wines that carry the name of the grape should have at least 80% of it in Europe (in the USA the regulation is set to 75%).
On the other hand, we find many wines that are a mix of different grapes: a blend of varietals that instead of being recognized by their grape type, is defined by their appellation or D.O. (denomination of origin). In France we can find that all wines are categorized like this (Bordeaux red wines contain Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc), while in the United Sates you find the categories are based on the grape variety. A lot of the world's best wines fit into this category.

Spain has created their own appellation method by dividing the regions into different D.O. (denomination of origin) to categorize their wine. Nowadays we can find many varietals along with the traditional blends so for practical reasons we are including both types of categorization (which is not very efficient for the blends but will certainly become handy when searching for a particular one of the rest).

During the last 10 years, the Spanish wineries have been trying out new combinations and getting fabulous results when it comes to blends. As a result of a huge amount of effort there are lots more wines, each with their own personality and character.

Although the grape is the most important factor in the wine, there are several others that affect their final taste too: climate, sunlight, the type and characteristics of the soil, the age of the vineyard or production methods to say the least (the list goes on and on). All these factors makes a varietal from one D.O. different from another, and this is one of the amazing things that you will encounter in the present Spanish wine map: dozens of D.O. that produce high quality wines with unique tastes. Therefore, there is a world of opportunities when it comes to selection.

We have divided the wines into five main categories: Red, White, Rose, Sparkling and Dessert wine. Explore all of the wine varieties and discover the ones that match your taste the most.

Spain waits you for an incredible ride that is definitely worth taking. Come and join us!!
  • Red wine  ( 5 items )

Spain is well known for its red wine tradition. Rioja wines have been responsible for this, and the good thing is there are plenty more D.O. than Rioja today.

Spain enjoys a very rich offer of reds and during the last decades it has been through a real revolution that has produced magnificent products, with more than sixty different appellations or denomination of origins to choose from.

We can find such a wonderful variety of wines that are starting to make their way out of Spain, while many others that are kept as high regarded secrets. As a result of this the trip to explore the Spanish wine production is one that you will highly enjoy, with so many surprises along the way, that at the very end you will understand why we state that Rioja is only the start….and a magnificent start at that.

The redness of a wine is based on how much time the must (unfermented grape juice) stays in contact with the skin of the grapes: take apart the grape from its skin just after the picking and you will get a very light red in terms of colour.

Here you will find the main types we have selected for you with all the information we think you need to know to fully appreciate their characteristics. Know what to expect from each type and plenty more.

Cava is the Spanish denomination for what we commonly refer to as champagne. The Spaniards are well known for really nice options in these types of wines jostly from the area of Catalonia.

Cava is slowly but steady being recognized for what it really is: a complex, amazing sparkling wine with a lot to offer. The best Cavas can share the category with the best French Champagnes.

The proliferation of smaller wineries and "Author" wines have done wonders in the development of this category of wines....and there are great things coming. Just give Cava a chance, you will love it.

Sherry is the number one export when it comes to wines from this category. Fruit wines are also very much appreciated in the southern part of country more than anywhere else. It is very common to have in bars some tapas accompanied by a glass of sherry.
