Wine Regions and Denomination of Origin |
|
|
The primary appellation classification system for Spanish wines is known as Denomination of Origin (D.O.). Appellation refers to the region where a wine’s grape variety is grown. Most European wines are appellations. The term appellation is ‘French’ and is used to refer to a specific viticulture region which differentiates one region from another based on its unique features such as geographical location, type of climate, soil, temperatures. All these factors combined result in the creation of a variety of wine that is not found elsewhere or cannot be duplicated. An appellation can vary greatly in size ranging from small parcels of land to hundreds of acres. The unique terrain of Spain results in wines of amazing style, the regions vary greatly in altitude, geography, territory and winemaking styles.
